“Il Cassero per la scultura” is a museum situated in the historical building of Cassero in Montevarchi, which was granted on loan for use by the Province of Arezzo. It is a unique project, unlike any other in Italy.

Its main aim is to research and document Nineteenth Century and Twentieth Century Italian Sculpture, collecting and acquiring material regarding the sculptors of that period, and setting up wide-ranging exhibitions. Il Cassero intends to establish links with Tuscan and Italian Universities, and become a reference point for the numerous plaster cast galleries and Artist Museums in the Region and in Italy in order to set up projects aimed at bringing little known or visited collections to the public eye.

The entirely restored collection in the permanent exhibition is made up of about 500 works including bronze, marble, plaster and terracotta statues and drawings.

The works arrived in Montevarchi thanks to private donations as well as a considerable number of original documents, photographs, and press reviews which are currently being catalogued.
In the “Cassero” collection there are important historical and artistic works by Michelangelo Monti, Timo Bortolotti, Arturo Stagliano, Alberto Giacomasso, Odo Franceschi, Francesco Falcone, Mario Bini, Raffaello Romanelli, Dante Sodini, Valmore Gemignani, Antonio Maraini, Mentore Maltoni, Mario Moschi, Firenze Poggi and Donatella (Dodi) Bortolotti, there are also sculptures from local artists such as Pietro Guerri, Elio Galassi and Ernesto Galeffi, which already belonged to Montevarchi Council.

The exhibition was curated by Alfonso Panzetta and Francesco Papa of Area Associati. Each exhibition room was conceived as an atelier d’artiste and so a space was created which reflected the character of the artists and their collections. The statuary on the ground floor is particularly spacious and suggestive and opens up onto the large square, dominated by the presence of the historic tower wrapped in a perforated steel curtain. This space is ideal for educational activities and events of performing arts.
